US tax deadlines for tax year 2026

The dates NRI families most often miss, in the order they fall. Download them to your own calendar with a reminder a week ahead.

  1. 15

    January 2027 Friday

Fourth estimated tax payment for 2026

Form 1040-ES, for income with no withholding such as rent, interest, gains and self-employment income. Raising withholding at work before the end of December can substitute.

    Estimated tax

  2. 15

    April 2027 Thursday

Tax return due, first estimate for 2027, and FBAR

Form 1040, or Form 1040-NR if you have wages subject to US withholding. Also the first estimated payment for 2027, the last day to fund an IRA for 2026, and the due date for the FBAR, which carries an automatic extension to 15 October. File Form 4868 by this date if you need more time to file the return. It extends the filing, not the payment.

  3. 15

    June 2027 Tuesday

Return due for non-residents without wages, and the second estimate

Form 1040-NR for non-residents with no wages subject to withholding. Also the automatic extended date for US citizens and residents who live outside the US on 15 April, and the second estimated payment for 2027. Interest still runs on tax due from 15 April.

    Do I need to file?

  4. 15

    September 2027 Wednesday

Third estimated tax payment for 2027

Form 1040-ES for income from 1 June to 31 August.

  5. 15

    October 2027 Friday

Extended returns and the extended FBAR due

The deadline for returns on extension, and for the FBAR if you did not file by April. Form 8938 is filed with the return, so its date follows the return.

    FBAR and Form 8938

India has its own calendar. The Indian tax year runs from April to March, and the return for individuals who do not need an audit is usually due on 31 July after the year ends. Check the date each year with an Indian Chartered Accountant.

Standard dates for a calendar-year individual. A due date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day, and disaster relief or your own circumstances can change a date. This is general information, not tax advice. Confirm your dates with a US CPA.
